New broadband supplier

Does anyone know where the "CPI+3.9%" bit comes from? Is it the maximum allowable by some toothless regulator? What happened to competition? I don't recall baked beans having any such stipulation.

Previously, I had assumed it was a maximum set by OFCOM, and all the suppliers had gone "ok f*ck it, lets crank them up the max we're allowed".

But last time I looked, OFCOM didn't set the limits, just reported on what was changing

And now it seems OFCOM are investigating tranparency of price rises

This sounds like what Virgin do. You then have to callthem and threaten to leave at which time they suddenly find you a discount. Quite why all the companies think we all came up on the down train is rather bemusing. The other clever thing, or so they think is that BT reliant contracts run for 18 months but the discount only runs for 12 months, and they won't let you renegotiate till after the contract period, thus you pay more for the extra

6 months which seems nonsensical, since why not price it to the level that gives them the same each month rather than trying to claw it all back at the end. Brian

The above seems to confirm my suspicions. I think it's like the so-called energy price cap. No-one thinks to charge less. PlusNet used to keep their prices the same year by year.

Allowing "regulators" to facilitate competition never seems to work: hence all those energy suppliers going bust because they don't have a clue and we all have to pay.
