Certainly not! That would mean the buyer would be paying two hundred quid just for a yellow sticker. ;-)

Please note: fuses are directional, so please ensure you install your fuse accordingly. If you are not sure on the correct direction, simply try it both ways- you will be able to hear the difference.

failing that, shove it up your willy and then you can jump the A&E queue to get all the other ailments fasttracked for treatment.

They test every one on the production line by making sure it blows according to the specification. We wouldn't want less than 100% tested products offered for sale.

On a rather larger scale, the substantial semiconductors used in the Traction Convertor in APT-P had pretty large (1) and expensive fuses which appeared to be blowing spuriously.

Upon opening them up for investigation, the internal structure was of multiple parallel thin copper strips, with sections punched out to create lots of necking points in series. Close examination showed that the necking points which had shared the arcing when it blew all had little blobs of fused sand (with which the fuse cartridge was filled). However, there were also a fair number of clean breaks, and it was eventually determined that they were failing mechanically due to vibration, and thus as the number of parallel paths reduced, the current capacity slowly degraded.

Ha Ha, Is this Russ Andrews again. All tweaks would seem to be negated by the rest of the infrastructure, so even if it was different, it would be so swamped by effects elsewhere its pointless. I think often a good ear clean out might be a better investment. However that pre supposes there are any high quality sources anymore that do not rely on lossy compression or dubious digital signal processing at the recording and mixing stages and the rest of the chain. I don't think that was his arse!

Is it possible that the fractures could also have been caused by repeated sudden expansion of the metal strips causing flexing as they heated up under startup load? I recently did some endurance testing on more ordinary sand filled pcb mounted fuses which were protecting a power supply with high inrush current. These fuses did eventually fail, but only after around 100k cycles. In every case the failure was at one of the ends of the fuse wire where it was crimped to the external lead. Often the wire was cracked at the end opposite to the actual failure, suggesting a fatigue process. These were 2A fuses with about 50A inrush current.

But the phenomenon isn't uncommon - the very suggestion that something can bring benefit can, as perceived, bring benefit. Who is suggesting what, and how, is obviously important.

I can't say it would not be possible, but the vibration it would undergo in that environment made it a more likely cause. I don't think the inrush would have been particularly high, relative to its rated current.

Great advantage of having a fixed exchange rate of 2.2 pounds to the kilo. To Americans a pound sign is the symbol represented by 4 long tree trunks as a square, the plan view , # (which may or may not appear as the symbol on my pc) , we would call a horse pound .
