Yes indeed, you have to contain exponentially increasing energy with power less than it will be generating. In my view, this is impossible. add to that we know of no material capable of contain anything that can use the heat of Fusion and turn it into electricity. Unobtanium has not been invented yet. ITYM fifty years away and have been for over 5 decades. They have managed break even for as much as a second (having used some insane amount of energy from the national grid to fire it up).

It is a very difficult problem - made more so if you want to extract useful amounts of energy out of it without quenching the plasma. Right now I think they would settle for just keeping it lit for 10x longer.

Indeed. They remain very much a pipe dream.
