Can anyone guess how this raised my suspicions?

You are either deaf and mute, or fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down? :-))
And was subsequently beaten by malefactors using several branches from the tree as I lay stunned and ugly on the ground.
I'm not bitter.
