HELP: Next Sputnik Halogen Light

Hi Everyone!

I recently brought a rather stange looking light fitting from Next and it been nothing but trouble!

The light has 6 G4 halogen 10w bulbs which are run from an internal 12V 60w transformer "block".

The first one we had buzzed like mad, and finally gave up after a week or so. The second lasted a few days, and so did the third!!

Each time I blamed the light fitting itself and that's why I kept getting replacements, now I'm not so sure! I'm still convinced that the internal house wiring is OK becuase nothing trips and this light works OK when it was first installed.

On closer inspection of the light, one leg from low voltage side of the transformer is connected directly to the chassis of the light and only a single low voltage wire goes to where the bulb is housed. - IS this OK? There is also a mains earth connection which also is housed onto the chassis, which has always been connected as I was instructed to do so.

Also, there are no air holes for ventelation, although I'm not sure how hot these transformers get?!

Any expert opinions out there to what is going on?

Many Thanks Regards Ad

Probably a bad batch of the light fittings. If you really want it, try to negotiate a partial refund and to keep the dead one, then fit your own transformer from somewhere else.

The new TF doesnt have to go inside the lamp fitting, you can run 12v down what was previously the mains lead, though you'd need to replace it with thicker wire if you do that.

Does the light have an electronic transformer? Are you running it on a dimmer switch?

Yes it has an electronic transformer but I'm running it via a normal switch.
