Halogen Lights

I am a complete novice with electrics but want to fix a halogen light (bathroom). The chrome rim fell down and I worked out that one of the "spring clips" that hold the fitting up was missing. I have bought 2 new clips (bigger than original) and I think I have fitted them correctly on the bulb-holder but when I put the fitting up into the hole the long metal bar is touching the clips and wires on the bulb fitting. Is this dangerous? I would really appreciate any help or advice from someone who understands electrics.

Are these low-voltage lights? Are there sharp edges on the clips where they touch the cables? Touching, or actually pressing on?

Can you simply hacksaw off the long metal bar?

Ok - it sounds like it's not actually the electric wires that it's touching - are these seperate? If that is so, and it's not touching the wires feeding the bulb, there is no risk.

Hi Ian

You might not find this reply because the message seems to have gone down the list very rapidly over last few days but no, the metal bar is not touching the wires - they are separate so I am hoping all is safe. Asking someone who knows to have a look though!

Ok - if it's not touching the wires, and it is a low voltage light, then barring faults on the transformer, it's safe. That's the way they are designed.
