The sort of psychopathology entailed in wishing harm to cyclists in general is just the sort of thing that leads to random murders in the street; at least when the patient is young and fit enough to commit such crimes. But I suppose if they were young and fit they wouldn't be pathologically jealous of cyclists.

Interesting. Could you also diagnose the psychopathology of cyclists who dismiss the deaths of pedestrians at their hands by dismissing them as being ‘just a handful’ (an actual quote from a cyclist) and therefore nothing should be done to curb them?

I thought you (collectively) were talking not about cyclists who injure pedestrians, but about cyclists who either carelessly, or (if they are aggressive enough (and big enough)) deliberately, aggravate motorists.

They're almost always urban-based cyclists, guilty of acting irresponsibly in town, or out in the country, on the narrow windy roads, insisting on their "right" to ride two abreast, that drivers give then the now-compulsory 1.5 meters minimum leeway, and/or hurtling at inapprpriate speeds through villages.

The same people are undoubtedly motorists as well, but when *they* are the motorists, the rules are probably turned upside down in their little heads, since their guiding rule in life is "Me" not "My fellow human beings".

BTW Spike's use, in his reportage, of the words "dismissing" and "just a handful" etc, reminds me of a story told around these parts of a farmer's Lad taking his driving test. He (and his examiner) approached a lollipop lady doing her job, but instead of stopping, he drove round her, and actually brushed her. When he was Failed, he demanded to know why: "Because you hit the lollipop lady [you numbskull]". "What?!?!", he says, outraged: "I never hit 'er! I only clipped 'er, man!!".

Again, they are not my words but are those posted in a cycling forum.

There seems to be a strong feeling amongst some that because some cyclists are hooligans then all cyclists are fair game as targets for violence.

If this is accepted as a broader principle then we should probably move across to uk.legal.moderated.

They ride through red lights, on pavements instead of cycle lanes, don't carry lights on their vehicles,wear dark clothes disregard every traffic sign and every signal they might use to indicate what they are about to do.

Outside of town on the 5 meter wide country lanes they ride three abreast secure in the knowledge that anyone who tries to get past will automatically break the law stating they must have 1.5 metres clearance, or if they are travelling downhill over 30mph, at least 5 meters

And they have helmet cams to prove it

This is not a minority, It is a large majority

There's a difference between a handful of cyclists carefully cycling for transport or pleasure and a hoard of racers, head down, pelting along on a road closed with little regard to the local residents.

Maybe if the principle is applied to car drivers, a significant proportion of whom are selfish or outright homicidal, maybe we should all be out dropping concrete blocks off motorway bridges. Certainly would be cathartic.

I have been both a cyclist and a motorist in Cambridge. There are good/considerate and bad/inconsiderate, examples of both.

A lot like life, really.

Was in cambridge this evening. Over 90% of the many many cyclists we saw were breaking some law.

See my previous posts. Out of about 100 cyclists only three were riding lawfully.

Its not inconsiderate, its riding without due care and attention. Or a licence or insurance.
