The EU doesn't like chickens being washed in chlorinated water to kill off the 'bugs' because in the US chickens are allowed to have about 30% of these bugs which can then be killed/reduced with chlorinated water down to the acceptable levels. Chicken in the UE isn;t allowed to get top the state of 30% bugs and the EU insists the 'bugs' remain at a much lower level where they are not a threat but this can onl;y be achived by cleanillness on the farms and transport, which costs a lot mor ethan throwning chlorinated water over them to 'clean' them.

But the EU will allow low levels of chlorinated water to be used to wash vegtables.
