Where d'ye find good bread, though. Bagettes are definitely not what they used to be. They look the same, but are no longer crunchy as they ought to be.

Our last two trips to Boulogne have been disappointing in this regard.

Their eating habits seem to be such that the quantities of milk that we consume are not needed. Thus it needs to be UHT.

Indeed, although I don’t mind ‘our’ UHT. I normally have ‘fresh’ skimmed or, if we run out, semi skimmed ( which Senior Management prefers). We keep some UHT in stock ‘just in case’ and I don’t mind that.

The French stuff always seems to have a ‘plastic’ taste, even in latte coffee when you would think the coffee would mask it. This applies regards of the packaging - plastic bottles or paper cartons. I don’t recall ever seeing glass milk bottles in France - even on our earliest trips in 1980s. That said, I’ve not seen one here for years.

When I was a youngster, we used to get fresh milk and puro. The former came with foil tops, the later crimped tops, like a beer bottle. It kept longer

- not many people had fridges. It had a slightly odd taste. I suspect it was a type of UHT although I’ve not noticed an odd taste on the UHT we get today here.

We generally look for a small local baker but most of the large supermarkets bake on site.

I bake bread but can’t get baguettes ‘right’.

That said, baguette isn’t my favourite French bread. I prefer a ‘Campaigne’ loaf - like a flattened hemisphere. I can get nearer to that, although that isn’t why I prefer it.

We’ve not been to Boulogne for years- we tend to pass it heading either home or south.

There used to be a good small restaurant in Wissant - between Calais and Boulogne. We used to go there for lunch on day trips and then stock up on ‘supplies’ before catching the shuttle back.

We stopped doing day trips years ago, we used to get enough ‘stock’ 😀 from our holiday trips - you can carry a lot motorhome 😀. Of course now, you are limited to far less 😒

As I recall, it was on the main road into Wissant, set back in a bit of a square - not exactly a village square.

It didn’t look impressive - in fact a bit tatty. Someone recommended it and his recommendations were generally good.

It seemed to be run by a family and was mostly used by French people. They made a fuss of our children who were young at the time.
