I think that saying anything to the boss who was getting a bung would have been *exceedingly* dangerous.
An underground pipe is obviously buried in a trench. When that is infilled, there's bound to be some unevenness in the ground. Are you sure that your dousing wasn't just finding that slight dip in the ground?
That sort of explanation has two huge plus points: a) It does not gainsay the empirical evidence that dowsers seem to have some ability. Nowhere near 100%, but slightly better than 0%. b) It does not involve any new science or non-science.
Just like homeopathy and chiropractic then.
