Saw a sign on a dentist in Girvan yesterday saying 'no English five pound notes accepted'....is there a problem with fakes...and who whould pay a dentist with fakes ? .....

Where is that then? What other types of 5 pound notes are there? Brian

in the near of AYR...

I only have Scottish ones...anybody who uses English notes in the near of Scotland are looked upon as being dodgy ....

I had a polymer £10 note that I'd had from new that became partially discoloured because it had been in my pocket rubbing against my credit card holder for a long time. When I tendered it at a local dry cleaning shop the owner was very sceptical about it and made an excuse to avoid having to take it. I forget where I eventually tendered it successfully but the cashier looked at it very carefully before accepting it. Knowing that I'd done very few cash transactions over the best part of a couple of years and that they will be fewer in future, I obtained a credit card holder with a wallet compartment to hold a few notes to avoid a repetition.

cash is king for me....stuff every transaction being registered ....

I remember that machine that was exhibited in Glasgow that could detect drugs on a £20 note....EVERY note they tried came up positive...tee hee

Maybe the dentist is a vegan.

what with all those animal fats used to make notes

You up in Girvan? I like it there, stumbled on it by accident when a road elsewhere was closed and have visited several times since.

been going there since I was a wean.....got a static van there ....live in Renfrew

There are already a lot of fake £5 polymer notes. A couple in the queue in front of me in B&Q tried to pay with one. Checkout lady wasn't fooled. She said it was easy to spot them, the hologram is really poor and it doesn't have the raised printing of "Bank of England" which you can normally detect on a genuine note by gently running your index finger tip over the lettering.
