Domestic gas supply seems a bit weak...

I'd think it was the percussion that did the trick and the batteries were just an aside -- it's unlikely they have enough oomph to keep driving a motor (say) for any length of time, and low pressure due to a discharged battery would be dangerous for reasons given above.

But I've often wondered where electronic gassies get their power, and speculated about little windmill generators on the gas flow. How well hidden are the batteries? ISTM that people will soon find out if you can stop/slow the metering by removing them. Do the meter readers go around with pockets full of new batteries?

Some years ago my gas meter was changed to an electronic one. More recently, they changed again, and went back to the old mechanical design.

Apparently, what with the changes in responsibilities for metering, the new company didn't want the hassle of battery replacement.

And perhaps more importantly don't charge a premium for prepayment. Best rates are normally credit based, fixed monthly direct debit, no paper bills, managed online. TBH I'm not sure why anybody buying from almost any other supplier than Ebico would use prepayment. Though I do appreciate that for some on really tight budgets it may help them not over spend but for me I'd rather go a bit hungry than cold.
