DIY biopsy (after the event suggestions :) )

Had a skin tag that seemed to become inflamed (maybe a cyst).

Long story short, it sort of "came off" just now. After dealing with the bleeding and making sure the area was clean, I wondered what if a medical professional wanted a dekko. (Unlikely though).

Intuition said to plonk it in 45% alcohol I happened to have lying around. Which I've done.

It was either that or spirit vinegar ?

What would the uk.d-i-y posse have recommended ?

A simple sticking-plaster just to stop what little blood there might be from getting onto everything.

Well obviously for the body remaining.

I was curious about the best - impromptu - way to preserve a tissue sample for possible laboratory analysis. Alcohol and vinegar being the two preservatives that jumped to mind.

I know formaldehyde is probably lab spec, but I don't tend to keep any lying around.

Get a microscope camera and take a few pictures.

They might prefer it alive. Too late now.

Not that invested ...

Well yes. But given the state of the NHS right now, that could have been another 6 months.

Though not necessarily in the same place. One of the problems with removing a solid tumour by surgery is the possibility of cancer cells floating off in your blood and lymphatic system and taking up 'residence' somewhere else.

If they have a narrow stalk they often become inflamed because the stalk is twisted and the blood flow restricted. Then, with a bit of luck, they die and fall off. I can't offer advice, but I threw mine away! Ask your GP on the phone what he thinks.

I wish mine would. It's on a bottom rib just to L of centre and clothing rubs on it, making it sore. I was due to have it removed late March... I'd cut it off, but a) the doctor is aware of it and b) anticoagulant! Doubt if the doc would be fooled if Isaid it fell of; also she wanted it to go to the Path. Lab. I do have some v. small cable ties that might do it but it needs to be down flush otherwise it'll still be rubbed.

On Dr Pimple Popper last week someone had taken his own lipoma out with a scalpel.

You could put a soldering iron up to max and cauterise it off.

Don't you just tie a piece of cotton around the base and it drops off?

I have been waiting since November for one of those to be dealt with. It was scheduled for around June, but Covid has has delayed that.

This is DIY and if not required for any other purpose freeze it off.

Buy a can of (electrical) freezer spray. The same will be available for water pipe freezing etc. the thin tube applicator is helpful for this task.

DO NOT apply directly to the skin from the can !!!!!!

Apply freezer spray to a cotton bud. You don't blast the freezer spray at the cotton bud - what you are trying to do is gently press the spray nozzle so that the liquid content of the can comes out in drops. The cotton needs to be soaked in the liquid which immediately evaporates and freezes. Apply to the cotton bud to end of the skin tag, and repeat until the end of the tag is frozen and solid. If quick enough you are applying the cotton bud when still wet and both the tip and the tag will freeze quicker and to a lower temperature. There may/will be a slight hiss when applying the cotton bud to the tag. After 2 to 7 days the tag will fall off leaving a tiny scab.

I have the T shirt and it does work.

Isn't that how they used to castrate lambs?

I understand you might not be up to date with latest medical practice, but surely the angle grinder approach is still current?

I was researching this before the event ...

Cotton isn't recommended as it's too coarse and won't pull tight.

Dental floss is better. However I suspect you need a specialist one-way knot that can only be tightened.

I had one on the inside of my upper leg, which blew up like a balloon on a stick as it rubbed on the inside of my trousers

I had it removed "officially"

20 minutes on the couch, 3 staff and lots of equipment. Right rigmarole for something that you would think could be destroyed petty simply

Previously, I had a "spot" destroyed by the Doc using a can of coolant spray (whether it's DIY grade or not, I cannot say)

I guess that means that they can't take it away to examine it afterwards

But then they can't examine the ones that they leave on your body (I have another one on my neck) that don't justify the expense of "surgical" removal.

Daft!

Bloody daft
