B12 diy Doctoring

Crikey. Why so many ?. The only people who genuinely need to have B12 by injection are those with the classic auto- immune pernicious anaemia, which has destroyed the patients gut cells that produce intrinsic factor.

I would have thought that everyone else could manage with tablets, or even by simply improving their diet (assuming any other underlying disease and/or medication isn't the reason for the lack of stored B12).

We just have overweight nurses instead (who nag patients about the patients BMI) !!

There is still a place for FAXed documents and for sending confidential information, it beats normal unencrypted emails hand down.

Isn't a signature on a paper document that is FAXed regarded as legally true ?

But he may be too incompetent to realise that and so was too stupid to order B12 level tests.

So, no need for the doctor to waste his valuable time giving routine injections.

What planet are you living on? That’s not gonna happen in the UK.

None of which stops a practice nurse giving routine injections on the doctor’s behalf.

Tim

Sort of.

These days you use a secure web portal with one time passwords and a url sent by different emails

The pair will net you access to boring documents you wouldn't mind sharing with anyone

It's only the nurses who deal with giving injections and taking blood in our surgery and they have enough experience to make it painless. I think they are actually called Health Care Assistants nowadays, nurses have priced themselves out of the market.

L-5-MTHF is "methyl folate" which is a more expensive alternative to folic acid. Methyl folate is only needed if you have another problem, which you probably don't.

There's a lot of misleading science and obsessiveness on the net about this. Just try it and see if it works.

We have rather a lot of practice nurses. Some of whom have no general medical training. Variously we have a phlebotomist. and lung care nurse, a diabetes nurse and a general nurse who can do things like removing splinters and stitching cuts.

If B-12 works, you should know within your 24-48 hours time frame, but all you might sense is "everything feels really fine" and might overlook the true trigger.

Those pharmokinetic calculations are too simple. The body recycles B-12 efficiently and the liver will store several years' supply, assuming normal recycling metabolism. If metabolism is starting to fail, then supplies from the liver become insufficient because you now need massive doses to flood the enzyme reaction (which is what B-12 is helping with) back to normal levels of function. This is very non-linear and there are cliff-edge effects at levels of, say, 20-30 percent but nothing will seem amiss at higher levels of deficiency.

B-12 and folate (B-9) is the only case in the body of two vitamins interacting, so they must be kept in balance. Riboflavin (B-2) is an important but overlooked co-factor of these B-12 and B-9 reactions and intake could be bumped up with benefit at the same time, especially as it is relatively cheap.

There is much misleading nonsense written about this and I hope I haven't added to it!

Some UK patients with pernicious anaemia inject their own B-12. I don't know any GP who will support this, so these patients buy their own ... usually from Germany.

Not all B-12 deficiency leads to pernicious anaemia and there can be different symptoms instead.

if you have pernicious anaemia (where the body cannot absorb B12), or your diet excludes B12 then eventually the body will run out of stored B12, and it *will* raid another convenient source, namely the sheath that surrounds nerves. AT this point the nerve damage is irreversible.

Personally I would say that anyone who has had a liver transplant shouldn’t be taking advice from USENET but should instead be speaking to his doctor!

Of course, maybe his doctor is as pissed off with him as many of us here are.

Tim

Just been listening to Sounds of the 70's on R2 and Tony Blackburn was a guest. He's been off ill recently and he said he was having daily B12 injections.

How do you explain your mania, dodgy meths?

ha ha ..... comes to most people

I'm more pissed off with him for missing my B12 deficiency .
