Looks like all the shelf price labels have been replaced with very thin mini "Kindles". Someone had broken one by being hit with a heavy lump and was flashing normal and all black,otherwise I would not have realised they were electronic items. High contrast, all veiwing angle, presumably electronic ink displays. Also I assume the shelf stacker has a gizmo that reads a sample product bar code and it , via near field, transmits the relevant data to each price "label"

There was a Safeway* in Nottingham that had all its shelf labels using e-ink, I assumed there was a whole-store leaky feeder that changed the prices overnight.
[*] This must have been nearly 20 years ago, as Morrisons bought them in 2004.

Doesn't solve the problem of an item not being near its label - might make it worse, actually.

Lidl has loads of no-price items too. Strange how such large businesses are making such 101 screwups. And have been doing it for years.
Probably not Aldi/Lidl but these things offer retailers the opportunity to implement surge pricing, your milk and egg purchases rise in price later on in the night.
How it all works is a very popular topic on YouTube. I've got a few of them to play with but zero application... hacking the CPU is out of the question, it's fort knox.

One predicted, but not yet implemented, use is individual discounts for each shopper, as are identified as being in front of the display by RFID chips in their loyalty cards.

I think that's more likely to be implemented on on-trolley or self-scan displays rather than shelf-edge, so the offer is only offered to the specific customer.

It's only a matter of time before supermarkets implement demand pricing like the airlines, railways and hotels do.
