Aerials

Mate is restoring an '80 Rover SD1 police car, and would like the period aerials it was fitted with. Any ideas which don't cost a fortune? New would be best, since the cars is being restored to 'as new'.

Wasn't there an episode of 'For the Love of Cars' that showed the restoration of exactly that car? It went to a Scottish museum, I think. Don't forget your passport.

No. That one was a pretty rare (for a police car) Vitesse. Most police forces used the carb versions - and often the 6 cylinder models. There are still quite a few around.

The Grampian Transport Museum at Alford. Who discovered that restoration was not quite as good as the programme implied. And it selling for top dollar at auction.

With me, I'll need it to get back into England.

Should think those designs went off the radar a long time ago Dave. An aerial from Panorama, goggle them, are in London ask nicely and they might give you a sample one which will, look the part:)

Oh well, I had some memory of the programme, at least.

They only need to look the part, not actually work.

Around that time Antenna Specialist ASP series whips were ubiquitous. I had a 5/8 lamda one for 2M that I transferred between 3 successive vehicles, the thing was practically indestructible. I used to see the same antenna on all sorts of "user services" vehicles.

any help? I worked for the Fire service in the late 80s, and Panorama M8 was the universal base used for Police & Fire antennas- it looks like they might have the antennas too.

Yes - and thanks to Tony for reminding me of them too. They're fairly local to here, and have used them ages ago. But didn't expect them still to be there.
