I need a take off for 4mm bore tube (ignition vacuum rubber hose) - preferably in SS but brass would do. The sort with an ordinary thread on one end and hose 'ribbing' or whatever you call it on the other. To screw into aluminium. Can find plenty of connectors and T-pieces but not this.

Barb.
You want something Metric/BSPT - to - Barb. Check the various "auto-racing-suppliers" like Merlin, Demon Tweaks, etc.
Ah - thanks.
That's where I was looking as they all do the hose and T-pieces, etc. RS Components do exactly what I want - but for 6mm hose. Suppose I could use a reducer but would prefer the correct thing.
Sounds like a hose tail. First hit on Googling "hose tails fitting" comes up with

find one that uses a thread I've already got taps for.
What size/type Thread would you like Dave? I may have some, in St.St. Made by the guys Martin found.

Thanks. I asked on another group too and got prompted to an Ebay ad - two for under 5 quid delivered. In brass with a standard metric thread. So I've ordered them up.
If it is tube and not anything turned on a lathe, its technical name is swaged.

It's the sort of stacked cones you get where the hose pushes on - to make it easy to fit but more difficult to pull off. Someone else called them flutes./
