It reminds me of a mashup between the Silver Swan in the Bowes Museum (and the same sort of age as this Writer Boy) and an Enigma machine. ;-)

yes the silver swan was amazing too and the person who made it was quite crazy and liked dressing up as a barmaid and served drinks while scooting around on roller skate type shoes.
