You know those adapters like this
1/4" hex to square adapter
Only at one end, and quite an ouchy price
I suspect most will just offer the sprung ball or c-ring as 'locking' options
Would glue/locking compound or soft-solder be an alternative?
Or even a tack with a welder...

Glue a small, thin magnet inside each end ?
slip a bit of card in there is another way.
Thanks all. I've gone for card and an additional bit of string taped between the two. I just don't want to lose the bit within a stud wall.
I might be a pessimist and get a few bits. Then you won't need them!
Use extra long hex bits ?
Cheaper to buy a few boxes of impact driver bits which will latch into the sprung ball bearing type
