Tips for roughing in washer and sink lines that nobody talks about

When you're setting up a laundry area near a corner sink, the trickiest part is always the venting and making sure you don't create a siphoning mess. You want that P-trap for the washer positioned high enough to prevent overflow but low enough to catch the discharge effectively. I've seen alot of guys try to tie everything into one horizontal drain line without thinking about the air flow, but you really need that vertical vent pipe to extend up through the top plate before it meets anything else. If you're working with PVC in a tight stud bay, make sure your horizontal runs have a slight pitch—at least a quarter inch per foot—toward the main stack. It sounds like a small detail but gravity is your best friend or worst enemy here. Gravity doesn't lie. Also, if you’re joining the sink drain to the washer line, use a sanitary tee that's sized right so the washer's high-pressure pump doesn't back up into your sink basin when it drains. Keep your connections clean and check your glue joints twice. Nothing ruins a weekend like closing up the OSB sheathing only to realize you have a slow drip behind the wall. Once you get those vents tied together above the flood level rim, you're usually golden for inspection.


I just finished a similar setup in my basement using an Oatey recessed washer box. The 2-inch drain line for the washer was a tight squeeze alongside the 1.5-inch sink drain in a standard 2x4 wall. I learned the hard way that if you don't get that standpipe height just right—mine ended up around 30 inches—you'll get a nasty suds-out during the spin cycle. I ended up using a long-turn TY instead of a standard sanitary tee where the lines meet, wich seemed to help with the flow turbulence from the pump discharge.

Regarding the venting, I ran a dedicated 1.5-inch vent for the sink and tied it into the washer's vent about 44 inches off the floor. I was worried about the siphoning too, so I kept the sink's trap arm at exactly 18 inches. I used Hercules purple primer and clear cement; I’m paranoid about leaks so I actualy let the system sit under a static water test for four hours before I even thougt about the drywall. It’s a huge relief not hearing that gurgling sound in the sink every time the Maytag kicks into its drain cycle.

Everyone forgets about water hammer with these new front-loaders. Those solenoid valves snap shut so fast it'll vibrate the copper right off the studs. I always toss a pair of Sioux Chief Mini-Resters on the supply lines inside the box to kill the shock.

If you’re using a Studor Mini-Vent beacuse you can’t get thru the roof, make sure it’s at least 4 inches above the standpipe. Use some Weld-On 711 heavy-bodied cement for those high-vibration areas. If you haven't secured the riser with a HoldRite bracket yet, do it now before the vibration starts backing out your screws and causing a permanent rattle.

Don't forget to secure that discharge hose with a zip-tie or a bracket. I've seen 'em jump right out of the standpipe when the pump kicks in, and that's a mess nobody wants. Also, if you’re tight on space, check if your local inspector's cool with a recessed combo box. It keeps the valves and drain in one spot so you aren't fighting for room between the studs. Just makes the finish job look way cleaner once the machines are pushed back.
