Once upon a time crop rotation was fairly well understood. Too bad it doesn't fit into the factory farm model.

Farmers in my area or south central Nebraska rotate soybeans and corn. The beans loosen the soil so that's a plus. I seldom see a wheat field anymore. Alfalfa fields are really rare. Farmers in the 60s usually had a few cattle. Homegrown chicken was common. Hogs, not so much. Livestock are rare anymore. I did see some cattle in cornstalks this afternoon when I went on one of those aimless cruises.

Wheat comes in right behind cattle at $1.4 billion. Hay is third but only about half the revenue of wheat. Barley is a distant fourth.

Peas and lentils are growing rapidly. Traditionally wheat was a two field rotation depending on a lot of fertilizer. Some organic farmers would plant peas and plow them under. Then they figured out you could sell peas and lentils. When the 2002 farm bill made them eligible for crop insurance it took off. 70% of the pea and lentil production goes to Asia although the almost all of the garbanzos stay here. Hummus must be taking off.

Durum wheat was never a big percentage of the wheat crop and there have been problems with head blight so pulses or canola may replace it up in the northeast corner.

Corn is way down the list and is mostly for fodder. Some people have been fooling around with soybeans along the rivers where you can irrigate.

Like farmers everywhere you plant what promises the best return but a semi-arid northern state limits the possibilities.
