Or higher voltages. You really need to be able to transfer a lot of power for at least 1000 to 2000 km with at least a half decent efficiency.

The calm periods are in large high pressure areas, thus the power must be injected into that area from some windy areas around it.

Look at a meteorological chart and especially at the isobar (equal pressure)curves. The more dense these curves are around a center of low pressure, the higher the winds and hence available power.

In a large high pressure area, there are very few (or none) isobar curves, thus no wind and hence no wind power.

NITROGEN. Fertilizers provide NITROGEN. If a plant doesn't have nitrogen, all the CO2 in the universe won't help.

I see no problem in them drawing power to stabilise the grid. You could have massive expensive batteries using the rare element Lithium we need for cars, you could flood huge valleys to make pumped storage, or you could just live with a bit of waste.

Geared can still be synchronous. Gears take power both ways, think engine braking in a car.

An inverter can easily stabilise the frequency, it just pushes it towards where it should be.

On the other hand, none of this crap is needed with a nuclear power station sited close to where demand is that runs 95% of the time at more or less fuel power with a lightweight grid uses to balance, not to transfer nation sized chunks of power in a wholly vulnerable to the Russians sort of way, Nogas backup. No need for Russia No massive interconnectors. No need for France or Germany. No need for batteries. No need for heatumps. Eletcricity would be cheap enough to just use an electric boiler. No need for any renewable energy whatsoever. Electricity at 10p a unit max.

THAT is what the Greens and other politicians and above all their RUSSIAN masters are afraid of.

Resilient national energy supplies that don't depend on Russia. Militaries that dont run on gender bent soldiers and fairy farts.

There is a theory that plant growth is limited by a shortage of one of many elements. Water, CO2, nitrogen, phosphorus, temparture, sunlight etc etc.

Looks like they're charging US for the meters, not the green tax, they put my f****ng standing charge up only 8 days after the installation! Coincidence? I don't think so.

Or.... too many people are using less power, and they want to get the same money, so they put it on the standing charge so you pay them for not using any power!

It's called the most limiting factor. It's fact, not theory. One just to see an unusually dry summer. Farmers have known it for years. A farmer could do everything right but still have a small crop if it didn't rain at the right time. My mom used to refer to the Dirty 30's.

I have much simpler logging method. A sheet of A4 next to the meter and a biro. I write down the reading at about the same time on the last and first day of the month and a few times during the month.

Of course they are charging YOU !. And you will be paying those excessive standing charges long, long after the cost of the 'free' smart meter installation has been covered.

And one reason for the hike in standing charges was to pay 'compo' to all those switchers whose minnow supplier went t*ts up and took their credit with them. All agreed by Ofgem.

Co2 will promote crops for nitrogen fixation from the air.

You also get the same functionality for gas - assuming that you have mains gas and use it.

Our household utilities (electricity, gas, water, trash collection) are. Our phone and internet are not. Cable TV is a regulated monopoly here but streaming is replacing it.

Enron wasn't a regulated monopoly of the sort that supplies our utilities.

Our utilities are closely regulated and allowed to make a profit based on capital investment and actual expenses and revenue. Some utilities generate power but some, especially small ones, purchase it from the grid. It seems to work pretty well.

That's a feature.

Power and wealth seem, long-term, to make people into statists. They want to control everything. Of course, nobody understands everything but that doesn't stop them.

Yep. If those crops are planted. The world runs on rice, wheat, and corn, none of which fix nitrogen.

Unless you want to radically up _your_ consumption of tofu...
