Some ABS is better than others. The best ones remove braking only from the skidding wheel, so even in a field, you can end up with brakes operating alternately and perfectly well.

Bullshit. Human beings cannot pump the brakes a hundred times a second. They also can't control the wheels independantly.

But you don't end up stuck in snow with a great big pile to dig out.

Very unlikely for them all to lock at once, and it probably knows you couldn't have stopped that quick.

I just press the pedal and the car stops. You don't have to think about it with ABS.

They aren't exactly voting for salt. But if the roads aren't clear, people call their municipalities, write letters to the newspaper, etc.

Nope. No idea. I get a water quality report that allegedly reflect what's coming out of my tap, but I'm not sure it talks about what the treatment plant. Conceivably, the water is drawn from deep enough in the lake that road salt runoff isn't an issue. Just insufficient information.

So it's residents complaining, not voters deciding on policy. Big difference.

Absolutely. In slush with wide tires I've come to the conclusion that all ABS does is make sure whatever you hit, you hit it SQUARE ON in forward motion. It CAN double the stopping distance in some extreme cases, while maintaining directional control. Threshold braking, properly done, IS more effective

That's good for those of us who are retired and don't HAVE to go anywhere - and there's LOTS of places in rural Michigan (particulaly U.P. there!! where the roads can get VERY ICY without being paved with salt.

If they lock it's not "threshold" braking - it is "pumping the brakes"

Except ABS controlls the brakes on EACH WHEEL independantly - pulsing each wheel if and as required while not affecting the other wheels. Fancy systems even use brake pressure modulation and some even "brake pressure boost" -to stop the car as quickly as possible without loosing control. ( usually combined with "stability control" and even "traction control" which is virtually standard equipment on cars offered for sale in North America over the last several years.

When the PD's had the Chevy whales they had to be retrained to keep their foot on the brake and keep it there. The old method was smoking brakes like no tomorrow and the cops were complaining because there was something wrong with the brakes because they were vibrating.

Never actually drove in ice and snow with an AWD but I know real 4WD ends up having the handling characteristics of a hockey puck when the wheels break their surly bonds of earth and they all let go at once. Recovery is a touch and go thing.

There is no affordable water treatment to remove salt. They can run it through an R/O but I doubt the residents will be willing to pay an extra penny a gallon and that still doesn't do anything about the health of the lake.

Salt water will be at the bottom of the lake until it mixes. We call it the salt water wedge in the estuary. Salt water flows in under the fresh water and it doesn't mix as fast as you think it would if you don't have deep wave action. If the water is deep enough you can also have a thermocline and it will never mix

Well, when you're the home of Flint... We even have little fishies stenciled on the storm drains reminding you not to pour your antifreeze down them.

They're illegal in the summer months. I forget the exact dates but I'm happy to get them off. They work great but they're also noisy and have reduced traction on dry pavement.
