Whirlpool range rant

Sounds as if you might have a "lemon". I'd check to see if your State has a "lemon law". Most States do, but most only cover motor vehicles.

At this stage of the game we are considering if the view is worth the climb. If this were a car and I had spent half the cost of a new car out of warranty and it was still not fixed I would take a route like this. Usually going to get help from the state is a waste of time.

At this point we just hope that Whirlpool will refund expenditures we made since oven is still broken and the appliance store repairman who said he is authorized to make Whirlpool repairs said he could not fix it.

Whirlpool has already made my s*it list of people I will no longer do business with. Their rank on that list is still to be determined.

Whirlpool always had a good reputation but the repairman sees them every day. Maybe they changed position and put profit ahead of quality.

Two years is terrible for all of that. At what point do you cut the losses and dump it though?

Prior to completely writing-it-off - do you know any competent DIYers who would love the challenge of finding the problem ? ... I know I'd love to give it a try ! just for the challenge. John T.

I am sure many of us have seen this before with other manufacturers. They make good products and in order to make more money they make them cheaper and end up producing crap. US car makers were notorious for doing that until the Japanese ate their lunch with continuous improvement.

No and I am too old to be that DIY'er. Oven is not something you can put in your shop and tinker with now and then. We can still use the stove top and wife has an air fryer and a small oven for us to get by until we get a new range.

The general rule in diagnosing tripping breakers is you start disconnecting stuff. I would be doing this myself but that may not be appropriate for the non technical. A range is not that complicated and if you are tripping 40-50a breakers from a short, I would be looking for burn marks.

Yeah, we had a similar though not quite as debilitating experience with a Frigidaire slide in range a while back.

And our 5 year old Whirlpool refrigerator has a failed ice maker fill valve solenoid, malfunctioning freezer light switch and the door gaskets are starting to harden and tear. I too am pretty much aged-out of a lot of DIY repairs and may just replace the damned thing with another one.

I'll probably check Consumer Reports for their ratings on reliability- though I've had some real problems with their appliance ratings in recent years. Not sure where else to look!

I miss the days when dryers lasted 25 years even though you sometimes had to easily pop the back off them to replace a burned out heating element or stretched drive belt. Washers lasted that long too though you might have to replace the mechanical fill valve or cycle control timer. My current washer is a computer with a wash tub and hoses attached.

When you finally give up trying to fix the Whirlpool, get yourself a Viking.

Do any of the TV stations in your area have something like around here ? You give them a call and if they think you are worthwhile they have a news person that deals with things like that and puts it on the news when the problem is resolved.

Looks like a stove/oven should be simple enough to repair. Change out the circuit board and any temperature sensors. Make sure the power going to the stove is correct.

If the stove quit working correctly before the warrenty ran out it looks like it should still be under the repair warrenty.

Our washer is the same way. Bought a new one less than 5 years ago. ONe of the top loaders. The way that thing turns the tub back and forth ties the wash in knots. I have to untangle them before putting them in the dryer. I hate those new water saving machines.

What is the model number of this range? If you mentioned it, I missed it.

I missed the part about it tripping the breaker.

Does it trip as soon as the oven is turned on , takes a few seconds, or takes half an hour or more ?

Check the voltages across the breaker and look at the terminals to see if they are getting hot as a loose wire could cause this.

If this is a stand alone range and not a built in oven, the company should have an old beater that someone needed hauled off. Put it in and see if the breaker trips.

Never did much with stoves, but did work on large heaters at work. Mostly 3 phase units that draw from 10 to 500 amps at 480 volts. We would use an infered camera to check for hot spots in the breakers. Doubt that your electrician has one of those.

TV might be worth a shot, do they still have those segments on the news? Probably not because it might offend an advertiser...

They do around here. I think they pick out places that do not advertise on the TV chanel. My son had a Nissan that the transmission went out at about 130,000. That modle had a history of bad transmissions and the factory extended the warrenty to 120,000 on those models. The TV station did nothing to help him. They do seem to want to help the ones that have trouble with small businesses like roofers and used car lots.

Oven was tripping the breaker but not the stove top but that also happened when wife had two burners on high. The appliance repairman had replaced the oven burner. I went to make a pizza and breaker tripped. I reset it and it worked but then a fault code came on. I reset it and it came on again near time pizza should be done and I found pizza burnt to nearly inedible.

Stove is a year out of warranty. Circuit board was replace but other areas could be faulty.

Electrician was pretty thorough in checking breakers and when here he had the oven and burners going full blast and nothing tripped.

I had a new breaker box put in about 15 years ago when I got a transfer box for my generator as old box had faults where breakers would not break. When they suggested this I talked to a retired electrical foreman and he agreed it should be changed.

What could they do for him? The warranty was already extended past normal and he was beyond that. Any car with 130,000 is susceptible to a trans breakdown. Yeah, at 120015 miles maybe but 10k over is well beyond.

What if you loaded the stove on a trailer and sat in the dealer's parking lot? Maybe drive around the block with it a few times. You could probably think of appropriate language for a sign.
