What percentage of flat tires can be saved?

Not everybody cares about cheaper. I rarely buy anything that's low-bidder, from food to tools to contractors.

The tire iron flies off your hands and nails you in the eye when you try to break the bead?

The car falls off the jack and crushes you when you try to pull the tire & rim off the axle?

Unless you're re-using old oil (common back in the 40's and 50's when rings sucked and you burned through a quart a week), all modern oils meet the appropriate standards and should all be interchangable, regardless of cost. Synthetics have fewer impurities due to the more costly refining process, and thus generally have a higher cost.

He's also missing the time cost. How many hours will it take with that $1000 investment to do all five (with full size spare) tires? Especially the first time?

And how many would be interested in spending their time doing that versus hiking in the redwoods or appalachians?

And like brake jobs, if the job doesn't get done right, you're putting lives at risk; driver, passenger(s) and those in other vehicles on the road.

Not much chance of losing a limb, but losing en eye is possible. The process does require a good amount of pressure to get the tire off and an inexperienced person can have an accident. Could damage a finger getting caught in there too.

Aztlan is spreading... I'll admit to buying used tires on craigslist. They were almost new but the guy had damaged one and couldn't find an exact replacement. Neither my pickup or I am that fussy as long as they are round and hold air.

I've mostly seen used tires for sale by businesses in Arizona. It's sort of a trickle down to keep old beaters going. At least when I was there there wasn't an inspection so the tire was done when it was mostly cord.
