What are hand-tools?

My recollection is that hand-tools used to not include any that were electric.

But that now an electric drill is considered a handtool, I guess, if you can hold it in your hand, and it's not a drill press. Same with electric saws etc.

Also I noticed a grave marker store than said all of its memorials were individually handcrafted. In fact, I'm sure the granite is cut with some sort of power tool, and I know the engraving is done with a sand-blaster controlled by a computer. Being the literal guy I am, I don't think there is much hand-crafting, except maybe joining the base to the thinner part that goes above it. I would have said individally made, which is sort of obvious (since you'll never see two that have the same name and dates on it), but it sounds nice.

Defend or contradict the preceding theses. This will be 1/3 of your grade.

Unless we're talking about a massage with a happy ending, I'd rather have CNC-crafted than hand-crafted.

In my estimation, a hand-tool is anything NOT powered by electric or gas. Drilling can be done by a "brace and bit", just slowly. Same with a saw, like a hack-, coping-, 2 man crosscut, etc

Same for wrenchs and screwdrivers

Language evolves over time. And, usage, both choice of words and their meaning often varies in different geographic areas. Checking an assortment of contemporaneous dictionaries for the same language, you'll usually find that definitions of the same word will differ. If you fight it, you're just behaving as many of us do as we outgrow the culture we grew up learning and living in. It's not worth the emotional energy to play Don Quixote. Nothing is gained by attacking the windmills of your mind. Live your life to suit your preferences as long as it doesn't interfere with those whose preferences may be different.

Hand tools are the ones with a real lifetime warranty.

I am awaiting the arrival of the warranty replacement 1/2" breaker bar from Craftsman that, IIRC, I originally bought while in college in the 70's.

The pictures look exactly like mine, except for a slightly different part #.

Broke it trying to to open an inspection port using a pipe extension on a 1 3/8" impact socket on an iron cap on my compressor tank.

Hand tools are the foundation of any DIY or woodworking project, but having the right workspace matters just as much. A stable workbench and ergonomic setup can really improve precision and comfort during long tasks. Brands like Flexi Spot Reecoupons highlight how adjustable and well-designed workspaces can support home maintenance, woodworking, and everyday hand-tool use more efficiently.
