Stuck in a thermostatic whirlpool

I'd consider this one

Take your finger out of your ass and go to Lowes or other store and spend between 15 and 30 bucks and get a cheap one to get you going. Then put that one back as an emergency spare.

As I recall, the thermostat was part of a new AC system, using his existing oil furnace, putting a heat pump on top of that. So, the thermostat is likely coming from the contractor and I think he has a busted AC. But he could tell the contractor just quote it with the cheapest thermostat and then later put in whatever he chooses. Good chance it would be the same cost anyway. You can get a Honeywell VisionPro for $100 on Ebay, the contractor would probably charge more than that extra on the deal if you bought it from him.

If I wanted remote capability on a thermostat, I would get a wifi one so that I could control it from my phone, both in the house and from anywhere, eg leaving the house for the day and not sure you set it back, etc.

When I was working and living in a cold climate, I liked having the heat come on 15 minutes before I woke up. Had two programmable T-stats and worked well.

I've looked at the fancy expensive ones and cannot justify the cost now. Use AC 10 1/2 months so when I go to bed I set it to my night preference of 73, when I get up it goes to 77 for the rest of the day. Since it is right outside the bedroom, easy to do when I pass it.

I could program the night time since it is consistent but for me, the morning time can vary an hour or two depending on what I feel like doing. I don't turn it up if I'm going to take a shower and that can be when I get up or after breakfast. Automation would not be as good.

Anyone thinking about a new system should be looking at mini splits. You can then zone each area separately.

I know two people that got them in the past few years. Both houses have water heat so ducting would be a PITA. The splits do a great job at reasonable cost and don't take up a window. They make a lot of sense.
