Sell your house to zillow ?

Only heard of one instance where a guy tried. The outfit he was dealing with made him a cash offer but he later sold the house for 100k more. Don't really know the details, friend of a friend

I've had more than enough of the zillow guy. Let him pay his own legal fees.

Any We Buy Your House or Sell Us our Car outfits are buying from you to have inventory to resell them. Obviously they'll offer you a good bit less than the open market price so they can make a profit when they flip it.

Didn't study much economics back when you were in school, eh...

While that sounds logical, I've heard from a few people on an auto forum that Carvana offered them more for their car than the dealer for trade in.

Both car and house prices are crazy right now.

I don't think you're wrong, but I had a somewhat different experience back in the summer of 2012. I had a 2002 Toyota Highlander with 145K miles that I wanted to get rid of. I shopped it around to the car dealers around San Antonio, including CarMax and AutoNation (non-traditional dealers), and checked the value on Edmunds and KBB. Everywhere I went or checked, the vehicle was valued at $2600 to $3200, which I thought was too low.

By coincidence, during that exact same time I got a card in the mail from a California-based outfit, offering to buy my Highlander. I called them and they made a verbal offer on the phone, sight unseen but based on my description, of $6200. I agreed and they sent a guy down from Austin, 70 miles to the north. He did his walk-around and offered me $5900 cash, but I held out for the $6200 phone offer. He tried to tell me that car deals don't work that way, that both sides have to give a little to meet in the middle. I told him I'd rather just keep it. Then he said he only brought $5900 so I had to take it or leave it. I said I'd leave it. He stood there while I turned and started walking back to the house. He said to hang on, he'd go to an ATM and get $300 to bring the total offer to $6200.

When he came back, he counted out $6200 cash, we signed some papers, then he left. A few days a later a car carrier truck showed up and took the vehicle.

To this day, I have no idea why that outfit paid twice as much as my second best offer.

Thanks. I should have put some decals on it before selling it, but that may not have helped since I've never seen a Highlander in any of the Isis videos. Lots of Toyota trucks, though.

They may have already had a buyer on the hook so it was just handling the money. Some of those weasels make most of their money with "dealer fees" anyway. Even Avis does that with the rentals they sell. If you do the ultimate test drive, (directly off of a rental counter) it is a clean deal. If you buy off of one of their lots, expect about $1500-1700 in added fees. I guess they have to pay those salesmen and rent on the lot. It will be the same car, in the same condition. I bought 2 identical cars in May. The one off the lot was $2k more.

Southeast Toyota (the distributor for the southeast US) and the local dealer I bought my current car from loaded up the vehicle with distributor and dealer fees and extras that added about $2500 to the sticker price.

Included were things like nitrogen fill in the tires ($200), protective skins applied to rear bumper, hood, door handle scoops, etc. ($400-500 as I recall), window tint (about $400), $40 worth of wheel locks ($175), sealed package called a connection kit with about $15 worth of cell phone and GPS cables ($95) and a whole bunch of other stick-it-to-the-customer nonsense type junk.

The bargaining was fierce but I eventually got the car for my price ;-)

BIG TRUCKS RULE - while California has a hugh demand for smaller SUVs and CUVs. It happens all the time - low demand vehicles in one part of the country snapped up for high demand areas. The price differential was a bit higher, possibly, than normal but years ago, for instance, you could hardly give a Fiat away in Kitchener, but about 60 miles away in Hamilton people would fight over them.

Nitrogen is one of the biggest rip-offs around. Personally, I use a proprietary mix of 78% nitrogen and a mix or other gasses. I can't list them here as it is a trade secret but there is a touch or argon, very costly. .

Window tint can vary. I just had my daughter's car done for $220, it is a small car.

Many things are added on by the dealer to up the price a lot, then they can come down some and make it look like you got a good deal.

I bought a new car in 1969 back when you could order one from the factory with much of what you want. It came in with something I did not order,but was told it needed that to go with the engine in it. They started off showing me in a book it was $ 45,fliped a page and it was $

Reminds me of a man I know that makes money at flea markets. He goes from one of several states. Fills his van up with one item in one state, drives to the next state and sells those items at a markup and does the same thing from state to state making a profit each time.

Isn't a Highlander like a station wagon? Hardly useful as a weapon of war.

OTOH, a Solara convertible would make a nice week-end car for a high-ranking terrorist.
