Here is a possibility Has any water been allowed to run into the drain recently ?? If not, then the "trap" has probably dried out. You should have a water trap somewhere behind or under the drain. It should always have some water in it to "seal" the pipe from allowing sewer smells from entering the house. Same under your sinks and in the toilet.
Also possible the trap is leaking, and won't hold water.

Pour some baking soda in the pipe followed by white vinegar. Then tape the drain up and allow it to sit for 30 mins. Then flush with hot water.

for tips. The one I suggested is for cleaning kitchen sink drains. Its non-toxic and will work for your problem.
