OT: Warning: Daylight Stupid Time starts Sunday 03/20/2019

I told my wife that she got an extra hours sleep last night when she came down an hour later than usual ;)

I hate getting woken up in the summer at 5AM by the damn birds raising a ruckus.

Succinctly, both Standard Time and DST year- round mean no more sudden jolts to our circadian rhythms, etc. But: a big difference as to when it begins to get light year round, especially in winter months, during which DST was not originally meant to be implemented.

As the only American I know of who prefers naturally earlier sunrises of standard/sun time, I cannot stomach the idea of two months of post 8-am sunrises during winter months.

People living in the western halves of time zones are really going to notice this if year-round DST passes, with November to January sunrises as late as 8:45 to 9am!

I keep bringing up the concept of permanent 'half-hour saving time, but so far have gotten no response or reaction to it.

Your half hour idea would probably confuse things, at least for a while.

Having lived on the eastern end most of my life, I'd prefer DST year round. Having move considerably west, I now don't care. Retirement helps too as I don't have to drive to/from work in the dark. No matter what the end result, a lot of people will be pissed off.

It's 7:29. There ain't no broad daylight in sight and won't be for a while. On Dec 21 sunrise is at 8:18:46 AM and it sets at 4:50:32 PM here. On June 21 it's 5:41:44/9:34:24 so it will be broad daylight no matter how the Feds screw it up.

I mentioned the $455/week limit in another response. Salaried exempt making less than that qualify for overtime. There are certain exemptions but I did not go into them.

Decades ago as a student I worked summer jobs as a toll collector and lab technician on the clock. I liked it because I did not have to take work home or work overtime or holidays without making more money. Also did not worry about the job.

Plenty don’t have to show up at work at a particular time. I have only had to do that with uni holiday jobs and when working at the uni while doing the post grad stuff.

Sure, but its far from clear how many are doing that due to TV programming now.

Those arent the reason for DST. Its much more about a longer time with the sun still up in the summer evenings.

While I used to get up much later than most, I now get up much earlier than most. Its very rare that I get up after 5am. My Dad always operated like that while ever I was old enough to notice that stuff and its interesting that I changed to that as I got older.

Now the only difference DST makes is that its still dark when I start the garage/yard sale run, usually at 5:30am even in summer.

I used to find that the 9am opening of the post office was a nuisance, but now almost never need to go there anymore. The supermarkets here mostly start at 7am except Aldi which is 8:30

I have heard birds doing that. They seem to be more sensitive to the sunrise, than most people are. Then, they are responding to a natural event, rather than something imaginary like clock time.

The difference is caused by doing things earlier or later, whether you are aware of this or depend on mind games like DST.

I like the plan where Pacific and Mountain time zones do away with DST while Central and Eastern have it all year, thereby halving the number of timezones.

Only a little bit more than the current system, and only once rather that TWICE A YEAR.

Same is changing timezones. There are better ways to do this.

Effectively changing the Central timezone (UTC offset -6 hours) to have an offset of -5.5 hours. Whole numbers could be easier.

We could all start using UTC. Then it'd already be evening (6:49 PM instead of 1:49).

Making the current system worse than anything discussed here.

I had to do a couple of days work once in western Michigan which is at the end of the Eastern time zone and where I came from was near the start of it. In DE we would be going to work or school in daylight but at that time in western Michigan it seemed very strange to me that all were going to work or school in the dark. I can't imagine doubling up zones.

Which is actually what we're doing (hidden within the dishonesty of changing the clocks when TIME couldn't possibly be changed by that).

Leading to the type A morning that's really bad for you.

I was in the "service sector" for 30 years and they encouraged flex time. It allowed us to cover from 0700-1830 with one shift of guys since some were early birds and others liked to sleep in. It obviously doesn't work if everyone was the same but they don't tend to be.

Maybe we should just do away with time zones altogether and put everyone on GMT. Then it wouldn't matter where you are, it would always be the same time.

My kids lived just west of Mexico Beach Fl right on the time zone from East to Central. It would take you an hour and 3 minutes to get home from the shop and rob but you got there 57 minutes before you left home.
