OT: nestork - About your image links

First, this is technically not a top-post. The info included below (starting at *****) was copied from something that nestork sent in response to one of my posts in another thread. I've included it in this new thread as background for my comments/questions for nestork.

nestork:

I don't know what newsreader software you are using that allows you see the images in your posts, but I do not believe that the rest of us see them. I say that hoping for responses from others as to whether they can see them in their newsreaders or not. All I see are the links, enclosed within the brackets. [image: ..... ]

It appears that you are accessing alt.home.repair through some kind of web based forum, not through a usenet newreader. Can you verify that? The reason I say that is because you said this in your response:

"If you go to the very bottom of this page, you should see a little box which has this text in it:

Posting Rules You may post new threads You may post replies You may post attachments You may edit your posts"

No, I do not see that at the bottom of any page, because AFAIK, usenet newsreaders do not include those options, only web based forums do. Not even GG, a web based "newsreader" of sorts includes those options.

As far as I know, alt.home.repair is not a newsgroup that supports images or attachments. In addition, the ability to edit a post once it has been posted on usenet is not available due to the distributed nature of usenet. So as I said, none of the newsreaders I've ever used support images in a.h.r. As noted above, I use Thunderbird on my PC and NewsTapLite on my iPad. In addition, GG will not show the images, only the links.

If I'm mistaken about your use of a web based forum vs. a usenet newsreader, I'm OK with that...I'm just trying to figure out what's going on. Your comments and clarifications are most welcome.

DerbyDad03's words:

I don't know if this will matter to you or not, but I wanted to mention something about the "image" links that you post. In both this thread and the thread entitled "Supplying Water to Toilet from Gravity Feed Tanks" you provided links enclosed in brackets [] and starting with the string "image:"

I was wondering if you add the string and the brackets or if your newsreader does.

nestork's words:

I add them. But, I don't type "[image]", I put "[image: " immediately before and "]" immediately after the URL of the image I want to include in my post.

If you go to the very bottom of this page, you should see a little box which has this text in it:

Posting Rules You may post new threads You may post replies You may post attachments You may edit your posts

vB code is On Smilies are On [image: code is On HTML code is Off

If you click on the "[IMG]" link in that box, it will show you how to use those "[img]" and "]" codes to post images.

The vBulletin codes are for changing your text by _underlining_it_, making it *bold* or -in italics- or changing the size or colour of the text.

Smilies are for pasting happy face expressions into your posts.

DerbyDad03's words:

I know it's my issue, not yours, but since a.h.r doesn't support images, if you are trying to get the images to display in your post by manually by adding the string and brackets, it's not going to work. In addition, it messes up some (well, at least my) newsreader.

nestork's words:

So, are you saying that no one else can see the images I'm including in my posts?

I thought everyone could see them. I can see them when I review my posts after editing them.

Dad,

I view this group using Outlook Express 6. Nestork's "images" show up as URL's which may be followed to view the images. The actual images are not embedded in his postings.

There are groups called "binary groups" and such groups support images since many organization that have Usenet servers may strip images from posts coming through their servers because of the amount of data taken up to support pictures. There is also concern about copyrighted images being stored on their servers so the owners just block all pics. ^_^
