Macular degeneration old age magnifying glasses

There is an old trick that works in limited circumstances. Squeeze the forefinger and thumb of each hand together and then place the ends together to form a small aperture. Look through the aperture.

Works for me with bifocals. Does not help AMD.

For computer I have bifocals with top lens set for distance to computer screen. Lower lens for keyboard.

I have a pair of progressives and never could get used to them. Too much hunting around for the sweet spot at any given distance.

I'm yes, of that age... I originally used straight 1.75 diopters, but then got a 40% off coupon for CVS, so tried their "Foster Grant" (yeah, a brand name...) progressives, and they've been great.

I also got a similar progressive pair through an ophthalmologist exam (grant funded, so reasonable price). The CVS one was better...

So I'd recommend giving them a try.

(I'm using them right now to type on my laptop computer which is, of course, sitting on my laptop).

Had a similar problem with my first pair. Had them adjusted to be about a mm higher and were perfect after that. I've had a few pair since and would never to back to bi-focal.

Mine were prescribed by my ophthalmologist ad bought at low cost from Zenni Optical.

Several years ago I had done a week or so of detailed work on a program on a fifteen inch monitor where small text could not be enlarged using my bifocal and I think that contributed to getting a pinched nerve in my neck.

Same here with Zenni, but I found the mass market chain ones actually worked better for me.

Of course, everyone's different ...

I'd use Zenni for single vision, but not progressives. Measure and adjustment is more critical with them so I want a pro to do it.

I do not believe they sold progressives at the time but got a pair of no line bifocals. No help on computer. I get their memory frame titanium's and only adjustments I ever had to make were around the nose. I had told my ophthalmologist where I was buying them and he gave me pupillary measurement.

I had my doctor prescribe a bifocal with one for close work and the upper part for about 2 feet for computer work. Zenny made them and they are fine for the computer and close work.

My optician is fond of saying "When it comes to progressive lenses, a mm is like a mile."

Yes, that is exactly what I did.

As I said in the OP, there is absolutely zero chance that "reading glasses" will ever be strong enough as even a +6.75 reading glasses they already have won't work for someone with macular degeneration and far sightedness.

I'm thinking of getting something akin to these Eschenbach Mobilux 6x24D100 magnifying glasses but I'm not sure yet how 6X and 24 diopters works out in terms of distortion and field of view.

Perhaps you should try a forum dedicated to MD as opposed to a home repair/political argument usenet group. Just a thought.

Your favorite search engine will provide options.

These might work but a "normal" pair of glasses doesn't work.
