fitted sheets for mattresses of different thicknesses.

I was watching a tv recording I made last December, and it included an ad by the pillow-guy.

This one was for pillow cases and sheets, and he said his fitted sheets would fit thicker mattresses. The mattress looked 10" thick.

So my question is, if it fits a 10" mattress, will it fit the standard

5? inch mattress like I have? It seems like the elastic won't be strong enough, it will be v. hard to get the extra "skirt" under the mattress and even if you do, it will pull out, and the sheet will end up having lots of wrinkles. Yes?

So does that mean they have to sell fitted sheets in sizes for all the different mattress thicknesses and I have not make sure I don't buy the wrong one?

And why do we have different thicknesses? I don't want to live in thick-mattress America or thin-mattress America, in foam America or spring America. I want to live in the America I grew up in, One-Mattress America.

The average mattress thickness is now between 8 and 14 inches.

They don't sell fitted sheets sized for specific mattress thicknesses. There are a few sizes. Generally, the cheaper the sheet, the thinner the mattresses it is able to work with.

Perhaps you could look at fitted sheets on Amazon or bedbathandbeyond.com to see what's on offer nowadays.

Because that's what people want. Choices.

Sorry, those days are gone. Nobody lives in the America they grew up in.

This theme worked for Obama. I'm just adapting it to America today!

"Fitted Sheet Pocket Depth When looking for a fitted sheet, consider your mattress?s thickness. Fitted sheets typically fit a standard mattress (7 to 12 inches thick). However, if your mattress is thicker than this, you?ll need a deeper pocket depth for your fitted sheet to prevent it from popping off the bed. Here are the corresponding pocket depths for your mattress?s thickness:

7 to 12-inch mattress: Standard pocket 13 to 17-inch mattress: Deep pocket 18 to 25-inch mattress: Extra-deep pocket

We advise getting a deeper pocket depth fitted sheet if you have an adjustable bed base to ensure the sheet stays on while the mattress is in different positions.

Not only are there different thicknesses of mattresses (standard, pillowtop, air, gel/memory foam, etc.) but some people like to add various thicknesses of foam toppers, both flat and egg-crate style.

Bottom line: Measure what you want to cover and buy accordingly.

The short answer is they don't usually use box springs these days. A lot of times they say "box" and that is exactly what you get, a plywood box. Manufactures now incorporate the box springs in the mattress so you end up with 14-18" deep mattresses. There is also a lot of snake oil and plenty of markup in this product so you can go from a few hundred to a few thousand for a mattress. You may not always get what you pay for but you always pay for what you get.

The other thing that makes me crazy about Big Mattress is that most mattresses are one-sided. You can't flip them to get more life out of them. Rotate top-to-bottom, but not flip.

That's going to make it even harder to take the mattress up to a bedroom. It was hard enough to bring a king-size mattress up the stairs when I was younger. I don't think I could do it now and triply not if it were thicker. Plus all the things I have sitting on the stairs' steps.

This is why they're pushing foam, isn't it. Not because they're better

-- I'm sure they're not as good -- but because people can squeeze them in their little cars to take them home and roll them up to take them upstairs.

The cynic in me says that didn't happen by chance.

Didn't I read about an employee gettting a big bonus when he suggested changing the shampoo instructions from lather, rinse, to lather, rinse, repeat>

I guess you never saw a mattress the way they get shipped. We got a king sized, 18" deep, inner spring, mattress on the internet (Bear) that came in a box about 36" high and 18" square. when you cut the shrink wrap on that mother it was like an inflatable life raft blowing up. You better be careful and cut it open where you need it.

I've been sleeping on a foam mattress for about 10 years now. Like it very much. One reason is, adjustable bed. Push a button and you can bring up the head or foot end. Great for reading or watching TV in bed. Will never go back to a regular bed again. Well, maybe tonight as I'm in a motel.

Why do you have anything at all stored on your steps? That's an accident waiting to happen. Clean it up.
