finishing rosewood flooring

does anyone out there know what is the best way to finish rosewood flooring, and preserve the natural pinky and blond tones without making it too red. my mom has now got her flooring down and is desparate to keep it the same color as it is unfinished oil seems to bring out the red and so does clear varnish. is it possible? or should she experiment with stains? any help would be very much appreciated. Thanx Tamarrah

Hi, best thing to do is experiment, especially if you have any off cuts or spares. You can never tell what a particular stain or varnish is going to look like and as you probably know, often don't look like they do on the containers. You may want to try a clear satin which will not reflect the light as much. Maybe have a go with a water based version rather than an oil based. These usually don't last as long but are a lot thinner and therefore less likely to change the colour.

Use a waterbase urethane and live with it, why was rosewood picked if now its to red finished. Mess with stains and you will ruin it.
