Our legislature and governor in Florida is talking about a constitutional change to eliminate property tax. Sounds good, but no mention of what will replace the needed funding for schools, police, etc.

About 30 years ago, we decided to stop using property tax for the schools and added another two percentage points to the sales tax. It was an effort to level the playing field for schools in poor districts. Needless to say, it didn't work.

We still have property tax, but increases are limited to 5% or the rate of inflation, whichever is less. Until you buy a different house, the basis of which is your purchase price.

You pretty much made the case I make against a national sales tax. Yes it would be wonderful for the economy, but the promise to remove the income tax would never happen. We'd be stuck with both.

There is not greed so insatiable as government greed.

It may have changed but when I lived in New Hampshire there was no personal income tax or sales tax. If you had children you might choose to live in a community with a well funded school system -- and pay the property taxes to support it. The same for police and other services.

The further government gets from the local community the more wasteful and corrupt it becomes. Even state governments are prone to overreach when you have a tail like NYC wagging the dog.

It will be fun watching Hochul declare war on Adams. I hope she has her next career planned.

It will be a delicate maneuver but RINOs like McConnell, Murkowski, and Snow need to be primaried. They aren't invincible. Last year our Democratic senator more or less ran on the platform 'I'm a three term Senator, I'm on the powerful committees, and I bring home the bacon!' Didn't work and he's back to farming for a living.
