Any appliance repair people out there?
I'm wondering if I should try to get this repaired, or just buy a new one?
Any suggestions?

At 40 years, I'd be looking for new. You may get luck and it is something cheap but you are looking at $150 service call to find out.
Your electric bill will go down with a new one too.
It depends ..
Make, model, size, chest or upright ? Symptoms ?
40 years old is 1984 - it might be worth a minor repair - - made in North America ? John T.
If it is a simple fix, like a defrost switch or heater, it could be an easy fix. If it runs all the time but doesn't freeze, that's another deal.
A new(er) one will definitely save electricity.
Used ones are often easily available.
