I was over at my mom's place helping her move some stuff in the basement and finally took a good look at her electrical panel. It's one of those ancient fuse boxes with the screw-in Edison bases. There’s a weird mix of 15 and 20 amp fuses, and someone even shoved a 30 amp one in there which honestly makes me a bit nervous. I even saw one of those mini-breaker things that plugs right into a fuse socket. The wiring looks pretty rough too, with that old-school cloth insulation that feels like it’s going to crumble if I even breathe on it too hard. I'm trying to figure out just how old we're talking here. Some of the rubber jackets on the wires are definitely cracking and I can see what looks like exposed busbars inside the cabinet. Based on the description of the exposed busbars and cloth-covered wiring, you're likely looking at a setup from the late 1920s or early 1930s. Those porcelain fuse blocks and the single-conductor fabric-insulated cable were standard back then, but they were never meant to handle the electrical load of a modern home. If you're seeing exposed busbars inside the cabinet, that’s an immediate safety red flag. Most of those old boxes didn't have the dead-front covers we use today to keep people from accidentally touching live parts. That 30 amp fuse is the biggest concern right now. In those old Edison-base panels, people woud often swap in a higher amperage fuse because the 15 amp ones kept blowing. But the wiring behind it is probaly 14-gauge, which is only rated for 15 amps. You’ve basicly bypassed the safety mechanism, and that wire is going to cook itself inside the wall before the fuse ever blows. It’s a textbook recipe for a house fire.
The crumbling cloth insulation is another dead giveaway. That's usually rubber-covered fabric, and over 80 years, the rubber gets brittle and turns to dust.
