I just swapped out my old 1998 Whirlpool for a fancy new front loader and I'm alredy regretting it. My old machine coud finish a massive load of jeans in about 28 minutes, but this new one is telling me it needs an hour and 45 minutes for the exact same amount of laundry. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I’ve heard people say it’s for "efficiency" because they use less water, but how is it efficient to have a motor running for three times as long? It feels like I’m constantly waiting on the machine now and I can't get through my laundry pile nearly as fast as I used to. Does anyone actualy prefer this or is every brand just like this now? Plus, I feel like the clothes aren't even getting as clean when they're just sitting in a tiny puddle for two hours. I'm half tempted to go find a used speed queen on marketplace. I just want my Saturday back.

The difference comes down to the "Sinner's Circle" of cleaning: time, temprature, chemistry, and mechanical action. Since modern regulations force manufacturers to slash water and electricity usage, they have to crank up the **cycle time** to compensate. Your old Whirlpool was a water hog that used brute force agitation to rip through a load in 30 minutes, whereas a front loader relies on a long, slow tumble to let the enzymes in the detergent actually do their job.
It feels counterintuitive that a motor running for two hours is more efficient than one running for thirty minutes, but the math checks out. Old-school induction motors pulled a ton of current. Modern brushless DC motors are incredibly efficient—you coud run that motor all day and it would still use less juice than the heating element or the massive water pumps in an older machine. Most of the energy in a wash cycle goes into heating the water, and since front loaders use about 70% less water, the energy savings are massive even with the extra time. You also have to look at capacity. Those old 90s top loaders had a huge agitator taking up half the drum. You might be putting the same volume of jeans in, but a modern front loader can often handle significantly more weight than a vintage machine without breaking a sweat. If you're doing one 100-minute load instead of two 30-minute loads that actually required 40 gallons of hot water each, you're still coming out ahead on utility bills, even if your Saturday feels shorter.
If you realy can't stand the wait, check if your machine has a "Small Load" or "TurboWash" setting. It'll use more water and more aggressive movement to get it done in 30-40 minutes. But honestly, if you go back to a used Speed Queen, you'll get your speed back but you'll notice your clothes wearing out and fading much faster. That "tiny puddle" in the front loader is actually a high-concentration detergent solution that's way more effective at lifting stains than drowning the fabric in diluted soapy water.

To address the "puddle" worry—the dirt doesn't just sit there. Most front loaders have a recirculation pump that constantly sprays that concentrated soapy water from the top back onto the load. It’s like a continuous shower for your laundry. To get the grime out, the machine uses high-speed spins between rinses to literally sling the dirty water out of the fibers using centrifugal force.
As for those "Speed Wash" settings, they're relly only meant for two or three lightly soiled items. If you cram a full load of jeans in there, they won't rinse properly and you'll end up with soapy, crunchy clothes. For a full load, you acutally need that extra time for the enzymes to break down skin oils.
