Can a USB-C cable start a fire if it's not plugged into a phone?

This morning around 5:30 I woke up to this wierd burning smell and thought maybe the neighbors were cooking or something. It was totally dark but when I looked down at the floor next to the bed, the carpet was literally glowing orange and there were small flames starting up. It spread to a rug super fast, like in a second, and I had to stomp it out and grab the cord. Ended up burning my hand a bit but luckily the whole place didn't go up in smoke. What's relly tripping me out is that the cable wasn't even connected to a phone. It was just plugged into the wall adapter. The brick is certified so I figured it was safe to leave it plugged in overnight like everyone does. Is it normal for these things to just short out and melt when there's no load on them? I always thought they only drew power when actually charging. Has anyone else had this happen with a reputable brand? I'm trying to figure out if it was just a fluke or if my outlet is wired wrong. I'm defintely tossing the cable now.


Nine times out of ten this happens beacuse the pins in the USB-C head got bridged by somthing conductive or the internal insulation failed. Even when it's not plugged into a phone, a modern charger is still sending a small amount of voltage down the line to detect when a device is connected. If there's a microscopic bit of lint, moisture, or physical damage inside that connector, it can create a high-resistance short. That generates heat, which melts the plastic, creates a better path for current, and then you have a thermal runaway situation on your carpet.

The "certified" label on the brick often doesn't mean much if it's a generic brand from a random online marketplace. Anyone can print a UL or CE logo on a piece of plastic. If it's not a reputable name like Anker, Ugreen, or the official manufacturer, the internal safety cutoffs might be non-existent. A high-quality brick is supposed to detect a **short circuit** and shut down the output immediately. Cheap ones just keep pushing current untill something melts or catches fire. You should also check the pins inside the cable head for any blackening or corrosion. If you've been using it near a bed, it’s easy for skin oils or even a tiny bit of spilled drink to get in there. Once that gunk carbonizes from the heat, it becomes conductive. Never leave these cables resting on flammable surfaces like carpet or bedsheets when they aren't in use. If you have to leave it plugged in, keep the business end on a nightstand or a hard surface.

Definitely get a **smoke detector** installed right above that area if you don't have one. You got lucky waking up to the smell, but if that had happened while you were in a deep sleep, the outcome would've been a lot worse. It’s highly unlikely your outlet is wired wrong—if it were, you’d be seeing issues with everything else you plug in. This is almost certainly a failure of the cable or the charger's safety logic.

Man, that’s scary. I literally leave my charger sitting on my bedsheets every single day while I'm at work. I always thougt if nothing was plugged in, there was zero power moving trough the cord. Is there a way to actually verify if a brick has those safety cutoffs before buying it? Like, is there a specific site to check those UL numbers or do we just have to trust the brand name? I'm defintely moving all my cables onto my desk after reading this.

You can acutally look up those UL file numbers on the UL Product iQ database if you want to be 100% sure. The real issue is that alot of these bargain cables aren't USB-IF certified. A proper Power Delivery setup requires a handshake before it cranks up the juice, but cheap cables with poor internal shielding can still bridge and pull current if the controller chip in the connector head fails. I’ve seen this happen with those extra-long 10ft braided cables people buy at gas stations. They use thin gauge wire that handles heat poorly. If you ever feel the plastic end of a cable getting even slightly warm while it's idle, it's a ticking time bomb.

Check the spot where the cable was sitting—was it kinked? I've seen tons of these failures beacuse people jam the cable between the mattress and the headboard. That constant pressure eventually breaks the internal insulation, and you get a short even without a phone attached. If you ever feel a cable getting warm near the connector while it's just idling, that's your warning sign to trash it. Most people ignore the warmth untill it actualy melts through.
