says that choke berries are "tolerant to drought, soil compaction, and salt."
"salt"? When used in this context, is that another word for "alkali"?

It's probably a word for "salt", meaning the usual sodium chloride as seen near roads, and near the ocean. Some plants are tolerant, others are sensitive.
Tolerance to a wide range of pH is mentioned in several university sources (that are not selling plants.)
