Why does my driveway keep sinking under the gate wheel?

I’ve been noticing a really annoying dip forming in the asphalt right where our heavy rolling gate sits. It’s a sliding fence setup and the wheel seems to be carving out a permanent hole exactly where it rests when the gate is closed. Every time we have a hot day it feels like the metal wheel just sinks a little deeper into the pavement. I’m not sure if I shoud just fill it with some of that cold patch stuff from the hardware store or if there's a better way to reinforce that specific spot. If I just fill the hole, won't the weight of the gate just push the new material down again in a few weeks? The driveway is only a few years old so it's frustrating to see it already getting chewed up like this. Maybe there is a plate or something I can put down so the pressure isn't all on one tiny point? I really want to fix this before it becomes a massive pothole that catches the wheel every time we try to open it.


Asphalt is a flexible pavement, wich means it behaves almost like a very slow-moving liquid during those hot summer months. When you have a heavy metal wheel sitting on one tiny contact point, it’s going to create a depression beacuse the sub-base underneath likely wasn't compacted enugh to handle that specific point-load. Filling it with cold patch is a waste of time and money; that stuff is even softer than the original driveway and the wheel will just squash it flat or push it out the sides within a week. To actualy fix this, you need to distribute that weight over a much larger surface area. The most common solution is to install a **steel plate** directly under the wheel's resting path. You want a piece of 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch thick galvanized steel, maybe about 6 inches wide and a couple feet long. You can anchor it into the asphalt using masonry bolts, but make sure the plate is recessed slightly or tapered at the ends so the wheel doesn't catch on the edge when you're opening the gate. Another route is cutting out a small rectangle of the asphalt where the gate rests and pouring a **concrete pad** in its place. Concrete handles compression way better than asphalt and won't soften when it hits 90 degrees outside. If you go this way, dig down about 8 inches, put in 4 inches of compacted gravel, and then 4 inches of high-strength concrete. This creates a solid landing zone that won't budge.

If you don't want to mess with the driveway surface at all, look into a gate support cable or a cantilever conversion. A cantilever gate doesn't use a ground wheel at all; it’s suspended by rollers on the fence posts. It’s a bigger project and requires much beefier posts to handle the leverage, but it solves the sinking problem forever because nothing touches the ground. But for a quick fix that doesn't cost a fortune, the steel plate is ussually the way to go.

The steel plate is definitly the move for this. I did somthing similar last summer and it saved my driveway. One thing to remember: apply a thick bead of construction adhesive to the bottom of the plate before you bolt it down. It stops water from getting trapped underneath. If you don't seal it, moisture will get in there and the freeze-thaw cycle will eventually loosen your anchors. Sealing the edges also prevents the plate from vibrating or shifting as the gate rolls over that spot.

Are you sure it's just the heat and the wheel? Have you ruled out a drainage issue under that specific section? If water is pooling or saturating the sub-grade right where the gate sits, even a steel plate might just sink along with the asphalt over time. I'd check if that spot stays damp longer than the rest of the driveway before you commit to a permanent fix. If the base is soft from moisture, you're just masking a bigger problem.

That steel plate idea sounds doable, but I don't know much about tools. What kind of drill do I actualy need for those masonry bolts? I’m worried I might just crack the rest of the driveway if I start drilling into it. Also, does the metal get realy slippery when it rains? I’d hate for the gate wheel to just spin in place or for someone to slip while walking over it. Sorry if these are basic questions, I'm just trying to figure out if this is a DIY job or if I'll break somethig.

Oh man, I am so glad I found this thread! We just got our first house with a real driveway and I’m literally checking the surface every morning for cracks. The steel plate idea is genius! Quick question though—since we’re talking about customizing the driveway, has anyone here ever tried those photoluminescent 'glow stones' in thier asphalt sealer? I saw a video where the whole path lights up neon blue at night and it looked absolutely wild! whould that mess with the integrity of the surface or is it just for aesthetics? I'm dying to try it once I figure out how to stop worrying about every little dip!
