Why is a 4 lb mallet tearing up my hands after all these years?

I’ve been in construction for over fifteen years now, so I figured my hands were pretty much made of leather at this point. Today I was breaking down some old framing with a 4 lb mallet for maybe forty minutes tops. It wasn't even a full hour of work, but I ended up with this fluid-filled blister right on the side of my index finger near the joint. It feels like a rookie mistake and I'm a bit thrown off by it. My calluses are usually solid, but this friction just tore right through. Is it posible my grip has changed, or maybe the handle material on this new mallet is just that much more abrasive? I've used heavier sledges all day before without this happening. That blister ussually comes down to a **death grip** on a tool you aren't used to swinging. When you're used to a heavy sledge, you let the weight do the work and your grip is actually quite loose until the moment of impact. With a 4 lb mallet, people tend to over-control it, especally during demo where you're hitting at wierd angles. That constant micro-friction against the side of your index finger will cook the skin under a callus faster than you'd think, regardless of how long you've been in the trade. Since you need to be back at it tomorrow, do not pop that thing if you can help it. The fluid is a natural bandage. Clean it, dry it, and wrap it with a bit of **moleskin** or even a small piece of Leukotape. If you just throw a standard band-aid on it, it's going to slide around and tear the roof off the blister within the first hour of work. You need somthing with a high-tack adhesive that won't budge when your hands get sweaty. As for gloves, stay away from the cheap knit ones for this kind of work. They act like sandpaper once they get damp. Look for a pair of Maxiflex or similar thin, nitrile-dipped gloves. They breathe better than leather and provide just enough of a second skin to take the friction instead of your finger. They won't save you from a direct hammer blow, but they'll stop the rubbing.

Check the handle on that new mallet too. If it's a fiberglass or textured plastic handle, give it a quick rub with some 80-grit sandpaper to take the factory sheen off. Sometimes those new handles have a weird tacky finish that grabs the skin too hard. A bit of chalk on your hands can also help if you prefer working barehanded, as it lets the handle rotate slightly in your palm rather than pulling on the skin.

I've been there. It's always those 'tweener' tools that bite you 'cause you're swingin' 'em faster than a full sledge. That extra speed means way more vibration dumpin' into your hand. If you're stickin' with that mallet, wrap the handle in some cloth hockey tape. It's cheap, absorbs the sweat, and gives you way better grip than those slick factory finishes.
