Spent the weekend on the kitchen sink and learned a lot about my own laziness

I finally crawled under the kitchen sink to address a slow drip and realized I’m still living with a temporary fix I rigged up nearly three years ago. Back then, the P-trap was slightly misaligned after a quick cabinet swap, so instead of cutting the pipe back and doing it right, I used a ridiculous amount of plumber's putty and a heavy-duty rubber coupling that was technically for a different pipe diameter. It looked like a total mess, and I remember thinking I’d be lucky if it lasted through the weekend. Fast forward to today and that ugly hunk of rubber and putty is still bone dry. It hasn’t budged an inch despite years of hot water and heavy use. I had every intention of heading to the hardware store for the actual PVC fittings this morning, but I looked at it, gave it a firm shake, and realized there's no point in fixing somethig that isn't actualy broken. At this rate, that wrong repair is probably going to outlast the faucet itself. It’s officially part of the house now.


I have a 2004 Tacoma that had a pinhole leak in one of the heater core hoses right before a camping trip five years ago. I didn't have time to drain the system and swap the hose, so I sliced open a scrap piece of mountain bike inner tube, wrapped it tight around the leak, and used three stainless steel worm gear clamps to cinch it down. I figured the heat whould melt the rubber or the pressure would blow it out within fifty miles. That "temporary" patch has survived three winters and a trip across the desert. Every time I change the oil, I look at that bulging piece of black rubber and think about replacing the whole line with an OEM part from the dealership. But honestly, it’s held up trough 60,000 miles of vibrations and temperture swings. At this point, I’m convinced that if I actually fix it properly, I’ll probably end up stripping a fitting or causing a new leak elsewhere. Sometimes the "wrong" way is just the universe telling you it's good enugh.

I had a similar situation with the exhaust on my 2012 Subaru Outback. About four years ago, the rear muffler hanger rusted completly off the frame while I was out on a logging road. It was banging against the axle so loud I thougth the car was falling apart. I didn't have a welder or a new bracket, so I improvised with a heavy-duty metal coat hanger I found in the trunk and a thick glob of JB Weld HighHeat to keep the wire from sliding along the pipe. I cinched that wire down untill my hands were raw, thinking it might get me home if I drove slowly. I completely forgot about it until I took the car in for a state inspection last month. The tech called me back into the bay, pointed at my rusted-out, wire-wrapped mess, and just laughed. He said it was more secure than the factory hanger on the other side. We ended up leaving it exactly as it was. Sometimes the "wrong" materials just bond with the grime and rust to create somethig indestructible.

My asphalt driveway had a spiderweb crack that was turning into a literal hole right where I park my truck. Three years ago, I didn't want to spend the money on a pro patch kit, so I filled the void with a leftover bag of sandbox sand and poured a couple of bottles of cheap wood glue over it. I figured the first rain woud wash it out, but it hardened into a rock. I've parked my heavy F-150 on that spot every single day since, trough snow and heatwaves, and it hasn't shifted or crumbled once. It's ugly as hell, but it's tougher than the actual driveway.

I find myself in a parallel predicament regarding the concrete apron of my garage, where a structural fissure began to compromise the integrity of the threshold roughly forty-eight months ago. Lacking the immediate capital for a proper epoxy injection, I instead vacuumed the debris and packed the void with a mixture of fine-grit polymeric sand and a high-viscosity waterproof masonry adhesive I had salvaged from a previous deck project. While the thermal expansion coefficients of these disparate materials shoud, by all metallurgical and engineering standards, have caused an immediate delamination during the subsequent frost cycle, the patch remains remarkably stable and devoid of any secondary hair-line fractures even under the localized load of my hydraulic floor jack.

Used a zip tie to hold my side mirror on after a rogue shopping cart clipped it in 2019. The plastic clips snapped off, so I just drilled two tiny holes and cinched it down. I've been trough a dozen high-pressure car washes and it hasn't budged. I even bought the replacement glass and housing a month later, but they're still sitting in a box in my garage. If it hasn't flown off on the highway yet, I'm pretty sure it's staying there untill the car hits the scrapyard.
