How I finally solved summer pour meltdowns — steps that actually worked

Working a slab when it’s 110 degrees outside is a different beast entirely and it's easy to lose your cool when the sun is beating down and the mix is setting up faster than you can screed. I’ve seen guys reach their breaking point and do things they regret because the heat just fries your brain. To keep your head on straight, you have to prioritize cooling the crew just as much as the pour itself. Always use a retarder in the mix when you're hitting those triple digits to give yourself some breathing room. If you don't, you're just asking for a panic situation where mistakes happen. I make it a rule to have a dedicated person just for hydration and shade breaks because once someone starts feeling that heat exhaustion, their judgment goes right out the window. It's better to lose twenty minutes of labor than to have a finished slab ruined by someone walking off the job or making a mess of the wet work. Keep some extra plywood or bridge planks handy just in case you need to get back out there without stepping directly into the mud. Managing the stress of the job site is half the battle in the summer. Just stay patient with the guys and watch for the signs of burnout before it turns into a disaster.


We ran a 40-yard pour last July when the bank thermometer hit 108 by noon. I took your advice on the dedicated hydration guy and added a dose of SikaTard 440 to the mix. It definitely kept the mud from flash-setting on us, but even with the retarder, the surface was crusting over so fast from the wind that we had to keep the sprayers going constantly. The biggest thing I noticed was that having that extra hand for water and shade didn't just stop people from passing out; it kept the tempers down. usally, by the time we’re hitting the bull float, someone is screaming about a low spot. This time, we kept a cooler of Gatorade and soaked rags on ice, and it actually felt like a professional crew instead of a war zone. I will say, those plywood planks you mentioned saved our tails when we had to go back and fix a birdbath near the drain that we missed becasue of the glare.

I’m curious though, have you ruled out the subgrade as the real reason for that crusting? If you aren't soaking the base down enugh before the truck pulls in, it’s going to suck the moisture right out the bottom while the sun fries the top. No amount of SikaTard is going to fix a dry base pulling the life out of the mix. Also, are we sure the 'war zone' vibe is just the thermometer? Sometimes I think the heat just exposes bad planning. If the pump is in a bad spot or the layout is messy, guys are going to snap regardless of how much Gatorade you give them.

Back in the day, we didn't rely on chemicals as much. We'd just call the plant for a 2 or 3 AM start. If you aren't finishing by 9 AM when it's hitting triple digits, you've allready lost the battle. I remember one bridge deck in '82 where we had the batch plant swap out part of the water for crushed ice just to keep the core temp from spiking. It looked like a slushie coming out the chute, but it gave us that extra hour we needed. If you're still pushing mud when the sun is directly overhead, you're just asking for a heart attack and a map-cracked finish.

I've had way better luck spraying a finishing aid like E-Vap than just using plain water. When I did my patio in July, I noticed plain water can acutally weaken the top and cause scaling later, but that finishing aid creates a film that locks the moisture in. It saved me when the wind kicked up. Also, I found that setting up a couple of cheap 10x10 pop-up tents over the slab as we moved along made a massive difference. Keeping the direct sun off the wet mud for even a few minutes gave us just enugh time to get a smooth finish without fighting the crust.

Update: I ended up taking the advice on the 2 AM start time and it was a total game-changer. We also had the plant swap in some crushed ice like someone mentioned. We were finished and off the site before the bank thermometer even hit 95. Avoiding that afternoon sun is defintely the way to go when the heat is this intense. Glad the slab turned out clean!
