Because of all the creosote.

That's the latch, the teeth allow it to be closed tight with different thicknesses inside the press.

2161: a piercing ornament, nose, ear, whatever ? 2163: letter or a paper press?

Still no answer for this one, I'm expecting to hear back from the museum on Monday or Tuesday, 2166 was part of a display that was loaned to the museum by a local tool collector, I'm hoping that he will be able to identify it.
