Worcester Bosch Service Hard Sell??

Sigh. Told me what? You have *completely* missed the point. As I mentioned I'd already determined, with your help, that the problem was almost certainly the gas valve but given the intermittent nature of the fault the PCB wasn't out of the question. Hence, either way I was looking at a =A3100+ parts price. I didn't call in WB so much to find the fault, but to fix it (although there was still the possibility I'd got the diagnosis wrong).

The ethos being to DIY? In my case I needed a new gas valve fitting - safely and correctly adjusted. Not only do I lack the knowledge but also the equipment. Surely this is one such job that's acceptable to leave to someone else? If erring on the side of caution like this makes me a hairdresser then so be it.

Come on Geoff - your comments are not being very helpful, which is a shame given the enormous amount of help you gave me in the first place diagnosing exactly what was wrong.

Geoff, don't all uk.d-i-y'ers have a limit after which they call in a professional? Isn't this thread just about where that crossover point is?

Geoff's obviously got it in for hairdressers. They almost put GORGIs in the shade when it comes to overcharging

Me.

It is a bit like a taxi driver advertising the fact he has a driving license....

No need. I pay aound 150 quid for full safety check, call outs + parts and labour repairs of whole central heating system. Even if I didn't I could get the essential maintenance/safety check for 50 quid.

185 quid call out charge is a rip-off.

Yes, and Cos exploit that.

I have no objection to 'high' prices per se ... if I am getting an experienced veteran with specialist knowledge of my exact boiler who can actually fix things. The problem is you rarely know what you are getting.

Further, if a 'standard' service costs 185 quid then these must be very uneconomic boilers.

Ah, but it wouldn't be me if I didn't give a kick now and then ...

I don't think I've ever got a professional in for anything (except BG when I wasn't in the country, and a carpet fitter, because it was part of the deal)

FWIW I think you made good use and got a good result out of this service. There is a time to diy and time when it just doesn't make sense.

gas safety records: Quite so. £60 fixed fee for a boiler and/or optional hob, £30 more per gas fire (of any type). However there are big discounts for doing a small block of flats.

3 weeks ago the engineer we had here said his visit report would come from head office. It did.

I doubt it really.

I had them here 3 weeks ago and the visit paperwork arrived yesterday. All correct.

I suspect what you experienced was was WB being a bit slack on their proceadures 9 months ago, (who knows, somebody could have gone sick, left etc, maybe his laptop died) and putting it right when your file was next opened / you drew it to their attention.
