Hello,



I want to strip some very old, very flaky paint off my garage fascia boards. I think there's twenty years of paint on it, so quite a few layers to remove. Can I use a wire brush, like screwfix #14326, or are these more for removing paint (or rust) from metal rather than wood? Would it be too harsh and scratch the wood? Would I be better with a sander?



There's a little rotten patch in the corner. Is the procedure to remove as much of the soft wood as possible, treat with a rot solution, fill and paint?

Be cheaper and easier to just rip the old one of and replace with a new one,then paint it.

Wire brush on wood is not recommended as it will rough the wood up.

UPVC facias quick and never needs painting again. I hate painting.

Yup, rip it out & replace with UPVC, much cheaper in the long run.

A wire brush will leave the surface of the wood looking very uneven a bit like driftwood.

A hot air gun and *sharp* scraper should work quite well for paint removal.

I did something similar to this last year, took the wood off and

*carefully* sanded back to bare wood with a P60 'zirconium' fibre disc (NOT flap wheel) in an angle grinder, very messy but quick!

Once the paint is off a random orbital sander or belt sander and fine belt can be used to prepare the wood for painting.

Yes, you can also put some small brass or stainless screws in the hole to help the filler hold too.

For a garage facia where appearance isn't everything, Sadolin Superdec could be worth a look:
