What's it called and where can I get it?

Question

I'm looking for a mounting for garden floodlights, so that I can adjust the height and angle according to the season etc.

I'm thinking of two tubes a couple of feet long, one of which can slide and rotate within the other. At the end of the outer tube is a hand-wheel to lock the inner tube in the desired position. Think of a microphone stand and you've got the right idea, roughly, except that mine would be bolted to a low wall.

This a widely-used type of mounting but does it have a name and where might I buy some, suitable for outdoor use? I'm thinking of possibly a chandlery, but I don't know what to ask for.

I'm ready for a bit of bodging if necessary.

How about a paint roller pole?  pole-2m/12639 I have an alloy one with a big plastic 'turn for friction' grip - the  Harris one looks like steel so perhaps less durable. Cheers Dave R

If you don't want it to corrode then why not saw up a roach pole type thing  and just put a clamp around it where you want the flood. Brian

You can get little wall brackets with ball and sockets. They are meant  for mounting small CCTV cameras. Bill

Even more annoying is when you buy something for one job, end up not using it but hang onto it just in case. Meanwhile pondering how to do a different job you remember the item, and it would be perfect, you know you saw it recently but can't remember whether or not you decided to chuck it out at that point, so you spend ages looking for it...
