What drives them?

We have an older Astro Osaka Ceiling light that uses one of these, and the other day when I turned it on, it lit for a fraction of a second and then went off. The unit was getting volts (checked with a meter), and the lamp was OK (checked using another identical fitting) so that only leaves the electronics gubbins that drives that lamp. But what does it do and is it likely to be available anywhere as a spare?



All those Astro Osakas seem to be LED these days.


Probably it just needs a new starter.

Horrible things compared to modern LEDs. Don't they just have a relatively traditional ballast? Not quite sure why some have two pins and some four.

I have an old work light using one of the large ones, I replaced that with a LED plug-in replacement. I think I had to remove the ballast. It doesn't compare particularly well with a modern LED worklight.

I have three in my kitchen, because they sit in fairly big holes in the plasterboard it will have to wait until I decorate but I expect I will replace them with flat panels.

2 = integral starter 4 = external starter

I think that, in fact, that may well be the badger. I saw that earlier but it appeared to be the wrong shape, however I see now that it is merely boxed. The unboxed image is incomplete, but OTOH shows the label clearly and it matches the label on mine in every respect. Thanks for making me take a second look - I'll see if Astro has one (unlikely perhaps as it's not in their spares catalogue) and if not risk getting one off ebay.
