I am a little worried by the intentions in this internet of things, where one has a kitchen control system which all the gadgets can talk to. I can see it now. Its all those embedded and forever unpatched linux boxes you need to worry about...

Yup...

There are loads of bits of internet connected kit out there running old unpatched linux installs that were probably not secure even when they were made, let alone now.

They will never be patched; since to most people they are invisible - they don't even realise they are running a network connected computer

In this case, embedded windows is far less of a problem, since it costs money per license, far fewer copies of it get installed on cheap commodity hardware.

I had to specifically block them on my firewall to ensure my old IoT linux machines are safe(r) as there are no updates to fix them.

I wonder if win10 IoT will be updateable without going to the manufacturer for firmware?

Not necessarily. Apple Pay on an iphone doesn't and its even more secure than a bank credit/debit card and those are very secure.

There are plenty of other things which would be a much better target for criminals.
